Kom Ombo Temple

product

Kom Ombo Temple is a unique ancient Egyptian temple located on the east bank of the Nile River, near the town of Kom Ombo in southern Egypt. It was built during the Ptolemaic Dynasty, mainly under Ptolemy VI Philometor in the 2nd century BC, and later expanded by other rulers.

What makes Kom Ombo Temple special is its dual dedication—it was built for two sets of gods:

Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of the Nile, fertility, and protection.

Horus the Elder (Haroeris), the falcon-headed god of the sky and kingship.

Because of this, the temple has a symmetrical layout—with two entrances, two halls, and two sanctuaries, each side mirroring the other. This design reflects the belief in balance and duality.

Inside the temple, the walls are decorated with beautiful reliefs, including one of the earliest known depictions of surgical instruments, showing the advanced knowledge of medicine in ancient Egypt.

Near the temple is the Crocodile Museum, which displays mummified crocodiles and artifacts honoring Sobek, since the area was once full of crocodiles living along the Nile.

Kom Ombo Temple not only served religious purposes but also functioned as a healing center and a place where people came to seek protection from crocodiles and other dangers of the Nile.
